Im*PEN*ding Sense of Doom

This figure is done in an expressive and heroic Deco style, yet wears flares.  Nice.
This paper was a thrift shop find.  It's meant for inkjet printing.

Imagine hundreds, perhaps thousands, of pens and mechanical pencils in one place.  Pen Place also stocks lots of ink and doesn't hesitate to spread small samples for the customers.

Why, oh why did they have to tempt me with carbon fiber?

This is an over the top combination.  More carbon fiber and stainless steel... and I even like the orange sherbet parts.  It may or may not write well.  I could say the same thing about Margo, the gold QDL.  There are times where performance just doesn't matter that much.

Temptation, you are a cruel and horrible mistress.  As it turns out, these tarts run in the $300-600 range.  I guess I am not the only person with extreme tastes.
And here we have MEK's TWSBI Diamond 540 and my TWSBI Montesa.  The latter is referred to as the "Buy One Get One Free Road to Ruin".  TWSBI recently ran a nice Facebook offer as a means to get rid of old inventory.  I do like this pen.  The refill mechanism on the 540 is sublime.

The temporary display stand is an especially tasty subject for a future post.

    1. I want that pen stand! It's a pretty good guess that it is a promotional item from one of the manufacturers.

  3. I'm sure there's nothing the least bit dangerous about this store... really! Just to show you how safe it is, I'll volunteer to spend an hour there all by myself...on my birthday! It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make :-)

  4. Dwayne, a pen store is a dangerous place indeed. I don't visit them often, but when I do, I always buy something. Luckily, it tends to be a $15 bottle of ink or a Fisher Space Pen refill, but one day...
Nice pens, too! You just couldn't help yerself, now could ya?

    1. Resistance was almost futile. My lust for $500 pens kept me safe. MEK received some nice ink due my visit and wants to go there for her birthday. Local business shall be supported :)

  5. MEK - it's a job someone has to do. We in the Typosphere commend you for your awesome bravery. ;-)

    1. Agreed. Her sacrifice will be appreciated. Her agonizing over ink colors will be entertaining ;-)

  6. My goodness, that is the VERY store where I bought my one-and-only fountain pen, a Cross!! (When I was playing Phantom in KC in 2009.)

James groaned when I spotted the store, but couldn't stop me from entering.

I asked for the least-expensive pen and the clerk was good-natured about it. I ended up spending $100 on the Cross medium-point.

It's always fun when people post about (favorite) places I've been. This pen store could have been VERY dangerous! My restraint was admirable.

    1. Ah, the Great Recession has taken its toll. Pen Place now carries everything down to Lamy Safaris in the $35 range. I almost bought one for MEK, but the build quality on the TWSBI Diamond 540 is so much better that she received an amber one for Mother's Day along with Private Reserve Buttercup from Pen Place.

It is a very dangerous place. However, I was drawn to really expensive pens that I would not actually buy. I am safe for the time being.

I'm glad you were able to get by there and impressed that the store has held its ground this long. That is a good sign for analog technology.

  7. Awesome stationery! But what is a carbon fiber pen? Where is the carbon?

    1. Look closely at the photos of pens with black barrel components. You'll notice a weave pattern. That is carbon fiber mat soaked in a plastic resin. Carbon fiber is used in high performance applications like aerospace, race cars and even musical instruments. It is way more durable than necessary for a pen. However, this is one of those guy moments for me where technology lust totally overwhelms common sense. Just for fun, plug in the search term "carbon fiber cello" into youtube.

  8. I too enjoy the 540. I like its big barrel for ink. Less refills. Their pressure one finally came out. I'm tempted.

I only buy from stores that let me test extensivelyt so that limited me to one. Once I got to know the owner, and she knew what I liked, I had to visit less. I love pen stores!
